Flu season, a sudden rise in sick leave, family reasons or simply an irresponsible overnight departure. Unplanned staff absences are a nightmare for every production director.
When three key operators are missing at critical stations on the morning shift, the line stops. Every hour of downtime means a direct financial loss running into thousands of euros.
Strategies for eliminating the risk of sudden shortages
- The cross-training rule (multi-skilled operators): Make sure every worker can handle at least two different workstations. If someone drops out, you can fill the key positions immediately.
- Contractually agreed rapid replacements: When working with a staffing partner, agree a response time in the contract for supplying replacement staff in case of an unexpected absence, within the agreed model of cooperation.
- An agency coordinator on site: In larger operations the coordinator runs a daily morning check-in of starters. If someone does not turn up, the coordinator mobilises reserves before the shift begins.
